We moved into our new home! (And as you can see the cats don’t know what to feel about all this… after a few days in the new place they are feeling more like themselves again!)
We had some closing date issues. I guess this is pretty common, but it really stressed us out. We were supposed to close on a Thursday around lunchtime and be able to get in the house right away. Not exactly how things ended up happening….
We bought a house from people who were contingent on our sale for them to buy their next house. The next house had some paperwork issues (liens and whatnot) and apparently that family was moving into an apartment. So when it all boiled down to it everyone had to move the days they were planning on moving.
We still had our final walk through on Wednesday and then the closing date moved slightly to Friday. Wednesday nights walk through just made me even more nervous – it didn’t even remotely look like the previous owners had packed anything to move. They were supposed to have their movers move them on Saturday and they wanted the house until 9am Sunday so they could clean after they were done moving.
So, for us personally that meant that we went from having 4 1/2 days to move in to 32 hours to move. Also, we lost our moving company. I scheduled our move 2 weeks prior to our move date – as they recommended by the moving company – for Friday. Weekends have premium moving rates so Friday was ideal. However since we were moving at the peak time of moving season they could not reschedule our move for Sunday. In fact, every place I personally called were booked solid until after the 4th of July (we HAD to be out by June 30th at 5pm), obviously that doesn’t work.
Our realtor was able to find a company to move us somehow – still not convinced she doesn’t have magic powers (Melissa DiMauro with Nothnagle is pretty great if anyone is looking in Rochester). I swear I called them too (or my awesome co-worker, Ashley, may have, while I was busy freaking out) but either way we were able to lock in 4 guys for Sunday at 8 – 8:30am. Overall – we had a really good experience with Interior Moving Services. Our biggest annoyance was paying the weekend premium rate since we were trying to avoid that. But under the circumstances there wasn’t really a way to avoid that.
They arrived at 8:30am and started loading. Originally we were just going to have them do the big items but with our tight timeline they ended up taking many more boxes than we originally anticipated. Mark and I pitched in where we could – moving things to the garage from inside the house or to the end of the truck ramp – making sure pieces were dissembled (if needed) and just trying to make it go slightly quicker.
We ended up leaving our old house by 10:45am with a pretty full moving truck, a few items in a moving van, and some random things in our vehicles.
We were able to meet up with Melissa at our new house so she could give us our key. She was awesome enough to volunteer to let the Time Warner RoadRunner install guy in on Saturday – while the other folks were moving out (so we didn’t have to reschedule our install appointment). She was able to assure us that they were really moving their things out and everything was going smoothly.
The movers made a brief pit stop on their way here – to grab a bite to eat and some cold drinks – it was really hot and humid that day! Once again, we were able to get everything in and get them on their way by 1:30pm. Overall it was a little more than we originally thought we would spend – but I don’t know how we would have been able to pull it off without them.
With the help of my parents, Marks’ father, my sister, and her boyfriend we were able to get the rest if our stuff moved over and into our new house in time. We officially left our old house at 3pm on Monday (we had to be out by 5pm). Pictured here are a few empty rooms before we left.
It’s been a crazy (long) weekend and we are all exhausted – back to work for a few days for us before we have a few days off and can dig into a few more things this weekend!
Oh!… And we may have started to rip up the carpet to get to the hardwood. Probably could have waited – but what can we say we got excited.
More updates soon – we are at the exciting part now!
